1 in 4 consumers very concerned about cost of purchasing essential food items in 2022, finds Post Office poll

  • 1 in 4 consumers (26%) when asked said they were very concerned about the cost of purchasing essential food items increasing in 2022.
  • 1 in 5 consumers (21%) were very concerned about difficulties paying household bills.
  • Post Office has partnered with the Trussell Trust and is supporting people who may face poverty this winter by donating 1p to the charity for every cash withdrawal made over the counter in any of its 11,500 branches.

More than one in four consumers said they were very concerned about the cost of purchasing essential food items increasing in 2022, a new Post Office poll has found.

Overall, 70% of consumers are concerned about the cost of purchasing essential food items next year.

The poll found that more than one in five consumers were very concerned about difficulties paying household bills in 2022. Overall, 56% of consumers are concerned.

A third of consumers (36%) were concerned that their job would become more insecure in 2022.

Post Office has partnered with the Trussell Trust and is supporting people who may face poverty this winter by donating 1p to the charity for every cash withdrawal made over the counter in any of its 11,500 branches.


With over 1.5m over the counter cash withdrawals every week, Post Office hopes to raise £250,000 for the charity. Since launching on 30 November, £100,000 has been raised so far.


Laura Joseph, Customer Experience Director at Post Office, said:

“Recent weeks have been incredibly difficult for millions of people across the country with the pandemic and now looming economic uncertainty as we head into next year. Postmasters play a vital role in the heart of their local communities. Not only are they open long hours so that people can top up their gas or electricity, they’re a friendly and reliable face with many Postmasters going out of their way to support those in need.”

Post Office advises anyone who is budgeting this Winter to deal with rising energy bills, particularly those who use cash to budget, that bills or gas and electricity top cards for a wide range of energy and utility companies can be paid in cash at 11,500 Post Offices or at 13,000 of its Payzone outlets across the UK.
